Obituaries

 

 Edith Traversie

Funeral services for Edith Traversie, age 90, of Timber Lake will be at 11:30 AM MT, Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 at the United Parish in Timber Lake. Burial will be at the Timber Lake Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will be on Sunday starting at 5 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM at All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. Mrs. Traversie passed away Sunday, November 02, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.

Edith Isabel Garreau Traversie was born February 12, 1918 north of Ridgeview, SD on the old Garreau place near the Goose Creek area.  Edith’s Indian name was Mahpiya Sna Win “Twinkling Cloud Woman”. She was named after her mother, Elizabeth Yellow Hawk Garreau Meeter.  Her father was Louis Garreau, Jr. Edith went to school at LaPlante Day School, Cheyenne Agency and then she went to Santee Normal Training School in Santee, NE. When Edith was younger she loved to ride horses, cook and dance.  When she was 17 yrs old she danced with Lawrence Welk at the auditorium in Mobridge, SD. This was a highlight of her younger years.  She also spent her youth helping her grandparents, Soloman and Josephine Yellow Hawk.

 

When she returned from Santee, NE she met and married Blaine Traversie they made their home in the White Horse area until 1989 when they moved to Timber Lake because of Blaine’s failing health.  In 2005, she moved to Golden Living Center in Mobridge, SD where she spent the remainder of her life.  To this union they had 15 children.  She was a mother, a homemaker and in later years found time to be a cook at the Head Start in Whitehorse, SD.

 

Edith and her sister Ruby were the local historians for the EB News for many years.  During this time they shared many stories and pictures of days gone by.  Some of Edith’s favorite pastimes were bingo, beating her son in laws’ at whist, even if she had to cheat once in a while, trying to teach her granddaughter’s how to make fry bread, sewing, and making things for her church bazaar.  Telling stories about her youth and her wonderful sense of humor.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Edith’s Favorite Hymnals were:   How Great Thou Art; (Lakota Hymnal) Precious Name;  Walk Through This World With Me sang by George Jones.

 

Survivors include: Son Melvin (Kelly) Traversie of Timber Lake; Daughter Darshan (Geritol ) Long of Timber Lake;  Daughter Betty (Roger) Dupris of Timber Lake; Daughter Paulette Rowley of Eagle Butte; Daughter Rita (Jerry) Farlee of Eagle Butte; Daughter Elaine Ward of Eagle Butte; Son Pierre (Ina) Traversie of Eagle Butte; Son Delbert Traversie of Eagle Butte; Son Kenny (Susie) Traversie of Eagle Butte; Daughter Sharyn (Johnny) Holloway of Eagle Butte; Son Andy (Hazel) Traversie of White Horse;  Son Red (Audrey) Traversie of Ridgeview; Daughter Beverly (Jayme) Longbrake of Oklahoma; Sisters Ruby G. Marshall  and  Darlene Mestes; Step Sisters Toni LaPlante and Mildred Bridwell; 65 Grandchildren including a very special granddaughter, Rochelle Dupris; 109 Great-Grandchildren; and 9 Great-Great Grandchildren 

 

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Blaine; an Infant Son; Son Thomas Traversie; Daughter in law Beatrice Traversie; Son in Laws Dale Rowley, Bill Ward, and Gordon LeCompte; Grandchildren Jeffrey Traversie, Jesse Faye Long, Duffy Dupris, T.C. Holloway, Josh Guirrero, Smoky Traversie and Lisa Marie Farlee; Great Grandson Kayden Kraft; Five Brothers; Two Sisters; Her Mother and Father.

 

Casketbearers will be all of Edith’s Grandchildren.

Pat Knellson will be playing the organ. Special music will be by Frankie and Lloyd Thompson, Blue Coat Girls and the Sisters in Harmony.
