Funeral service for Frank Shooter, age 96, of Ft. Yates, ND will be at 11 AM CT, Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008 at the Bullhead Gym. Burial will be at St. John’s Episcopal Cemetery in Bullhead under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. Visitation will start at 1 PM Wednesday with a prayer service at 7 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Shooter Entered the Spirit world on November 1, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Mobridge.

 

Franklin Jerome Shooter was born April 11, 1912 to Louisa (Red Feather) Red Fish and Edward Shooter near Firesteel Creek. His childhood was spent with his family near the historical Old Stone Church north of Timber Lake, South Dakota.

He attended school in Fort Yates where he graduated from the eighth grade in 1929.  He ranched most of his adult life until 1944 for his step father, James Red Fish.

Frank married Zelda Shields in 1932 and had four children, Robert Franklin (deceased), Jerome Howard (deceased), Wilma Elizabeth (deceased) and Suzanne LaVerne Shields of Bismarck, North Dakota.

 

He enlisted in the United States Army on April 19, 1944 where he served in the South Pacific during World War 11 and the Korean Conflict.  He separated as Corporal in 1946.

Frank later resided in Wakpala, South Dakota for many years until he moved to Bismarck to be near his family.  He entered the Beverly Health Care facility in the fall of 2003 where he resided until his death November 1, 2008.

 

Frank is survived by one daughter Suzanne (Shooter) Shields, one son, Gerald Running Hawk, 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  Frank will always be remembered by his family as an articulate storyteller.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, older brothers, Jacob, Henry, and Leo Brown Otter, one sister Nellie Rattling Thunder, and younger brothers Charles and William Red Fish, Clayton Brown Otter Sr. and Leo Shooter.  Also preceding in death are his children Robert Franklin, Jerome Howard, Theodore Iron Thunder and Wilma Elizabeth, also, one grandson Garrett Shooter.

 

Pallbearers are Patrick Volk, Todd Volk, Daniel Volk, Robert Volk, Matthew Hertel, Dana Hertel, Chad Shields, Devin Volk, Zach Goes Ahead, Dawson Gipp and Casey Volk.

 

Honorary pallbearers are LeLewis Gipp, Chris Peltier, Milton Brown Otter, Leo Brown Otter, Irvin Rosebud, Gerald Running Hawk, Carol Sanders, Joe Strong Heart and family, Brought/Village Center/Brown Otter Post 82, Standing Rock Elderly Protection team, John Red Bear, Golden Living Center staff, All Veterans, all grandchildren, nieces and nephews and all friends of Frank.
